I have Word 2000. I seem to have a corrupt Word application. Whenever I open
a file and try to close it without making changes, it asks me if I want to
save the changes. I have not made any changes. But something is being written
in the background, as sometimes indicated by the page turner at the
beginning. I have already deleted the Normal templates and did a repair on
the help menu. What's going on and what must I do now to correct?

You probably have an add-in that's making changes you don't see. Read
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA011514521033.aspx for
troubleshooting steps.

The "page turner" only means that the spelling checker is working in the
background. That shouldn't be related to the problem. You can right-click
the icon and turn off the checker -- you can always run it manually from the
menu or with F7.
