trying to insert page numbers where i want them to be inserted

Version: 2004
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I'm preparing a book manuscript, and I want to insert page numbers beginning with the first chapter,

but it won't let me! I don't want page numbers on the titlepage and copyright page and dedication page and contents page,

want the page number insertion to start on the first page of the text!

I can't believe that something as simple as this is not supported by Word!

It is. You need to familiarize yourself with Section Breaks and the use of
Headers & Footers. There may also be a number of other features of the
program to investigate [such as the use of Styles] if you're using the term
'manuscript' literally.
