Trying to open Word, "system resources too low to..." & crash

I've got Office 2000 in 98-2e, do not have original
discs.Have 512 RAM, lots of hard drive space, speed is
about 966.

This problem just started happening, shortly afer a
lightning bolt hit the house across the street, caused a
power surge that my modest surge protector failed to
protect from, and fried my ethernet card (and tuner
function of stereo receiver). Ethernet card was, at least,
easy to replace.

Don't know if that surge caused this problem, can't be
sure of timing of inception of problem, which is:

Whenever I try to open Word or a Word file, after a short
delay I get the white window of death--"system resources
too low to yada yada, close some programs etc," but system
at that point is totally frozen--can't even ctrl-alt-
delete. And nothing else is open anyway. Have to reboot.

All other Office applications work fine. I can open the
word files in Wordpad or Works, fine (phew!)

All other Windows functions work fine. Only other problem
is can't uninstall or open/play Real Player, but have had
that problem for months.

Could the lightning have caused this? Is it my OS? Wha?

Thanks,
Arthur
