Trying to Save Onto Normal.dot

Windows 2000, Word XP

One of the users here had this just start to happen.
Every time she exits Word, it gives her and error message
saying the "This file is in use by another application or
user". I have checked Task Manager to see if it is
running after a crash and this could be causing it, but it
does not appear on the list or on the Processes tab. She
says even when she reboots it still happens. It is a
shared Normal.dot by all the users in the office here, and
this is not happening to anyone else. I tried exiting out
of even a new blank document and not saving and it still
happens. I also searched and deleted any ~*.* Temp Files
on her hard drives and still happens. Any suggestions on
where to look for a solution?

Thanks!

Shared normal.dot? How is it shared? If you are trying to share one
normal.dot centrally on the server it won't work. If you let us know what
you are trying to achieve by sharing normal.dot, we can almost certainly
tell you a better way to do it.

The Normal.dot is a shared point where the User Template
Points for all users in a directory that is read only
except for 2 users.

It contains the firm standard page setup and fonts only.
All Autotect, macros, cutom tools and toolbars are stored
in Startup Templates in another folder. This has worked
well for years and only recently has this problem occured
with one user and now this morning 2 out of 25 users.

I personally hdo not have this happening and have acessed
Word and excitied out of Word in boht XP and 2003 without
this problem, as have 2 others I have talked to already
this morning. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Maybe I'm being dumb, but I cannot see how this can work. I know it cannot
work. You are saying that normal.dot is in a shared location for all users
and is read only. It just isn't possible to successfully share one
normal.dot and even less likely to work from a read only location.

Word needs to be able to open normal.dot, create a temp file in the same
directory, to save changes to normal.dot and remove the temp file when it is
closed. That just cannot happen with a read only folder, so you cannot be
using Word like this.

A template in your Group Startup folder is the way to share all the
AutoText, Macros and other customisations. Corporate Fonts, Page setup and
the like are stored with the template the user opens to create their
document. This shouldn't be normal.dot but an appropriate template in the
Workgroup Template folder.

See the following page for more details on templates:
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/index.htm

The description of the problem that the users are having suggests that they
may have a problem with abandoned temp files, though you say you have
already checked for them. Try the following FAQ that also included tips on
problems closing: http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm
