Trying to setup custom field in PWA

David

Hello,

thanks for your time - i am trying to set up a custom
field in PWA - i need to include "ETC" estimate to
complet - describing the time that the user estimates as
needed by him till completion of the task... thus it
should be an additional field in PWA per task that the
user resource can update while updating his tasks...

do you see any possibillity for such a field, or should i
stop searching cause it is impossible to be implemented in
project???

any response is gratefully received!!!

thank you

David -

The default timesheet view includes the "Remaining Work" field for each
assignment. The purpose of this field is to capture the estimated work to
complete. As actual hours are entered (assuming you are using this method of
time capture), the remaining work is automatically reduced. By default, the
value of Remaining Work can be updated by the user to make necessary
adjustments based on the progress made. In practice, we also ask team
members to attach a note explaining the reason for updating the remaining
work (both increasing or decreasing).

While it is possible to create custom fields and publish them to the
timesheet view and make them editable, I can't imagine that you really want a
duplicate field.

Enjoy.

John,

thanks for your help - and you are right - i really do not
want a duplicate field at all - but what i want sadly is
not what counts... my boss always used ETC as estimate
till completion - and he wants it implemented -

i am using the method that resources update their
timesheets by entering their actual hours worked per day
in half monthly periods in PWA - and i would want the user
to also give an estimate what he thinks he will still need
till completion of the task... entered in PWA - not per
day but per task in totla - thus it is somehow the
remaining work - but from resource view not from project
view...

i didn't know of the option that the user can update the
remaining work in "PWA" - am i understanding you correctly
and this function does exist??? if yes - how can i
implement it??? any help will help... !!!

thank you

Since I can't see your specific timesheet view, I will assume it is the
default...On the timesheet view for each resource the assignment information
is on the left pane and the time-phased actual work is on the right pane.
Both panes have a horizontal scroll bar on the bottom. If you scroll to the
right on the "left" pane, the Remaining Work field should be displayed and be
editable by the resource. If you would prefer that this field be displayed
to the immediate right of the task name, so that users don't need to scroll
or adjust the divider line, then you can modify the layout of the view within
the "Manage Views" option in the Admin page.

If the Remaining Work field is not included in your timesheet view, then we
would need to go through some additional steps to ensure it is being
published, is editable and is added to the view.

Also, the Remaining Work is an assignment attribute (left pane) and not a
time-phased attribute so it does what you are looking for.

Hope this helps.

Hey John...
that sounds like good news - thus i can make it work
without spending the next month searching through things i
do not understand in the first place!!!
sadly i just checked and found out that the "remaining
work" field is not part of the PWA task view... i guess i
will have to configure that first - any idea how to do
this - or is there a fast way just to reset it to default
settings... without loosing too much information???

thank you for your time and help

Let's start with the easy thing to confirm (unless I am also missing
something)...

Add Remaining Work to the timesheet view:

1. In PWA, go to the Admin page and choose to "Manage Views."
2. Scroll down to the Timesheet view (there is, and can only be, one
timesheet view)
3. Select the timesheet view and choose to "Modify View"
4. Select the Remaining Work field in the Available Fields list and add it
to the displayed fields
5. Move the Remaining Work field Up to the location you would prefer (we
have it right after the Task Name)

Unless I'm missing another configuration option that you may have selected,
the remaining work should already be published (as I don't believe you can
remove this as a published field to the tasks view).

Good Luck
