I have been to the normal template and changed the format of the lines that are created by the line tool in draw. The colour and the thickness of the line stay changed and come up correctly on each new document BUT every line is still drawn with a drop shadow - where can I make drop shadow off as the default setting?

Okay Ive cracked it

Open the normal template in user>library>applicationsupport>microsoft>office>usertemplares>normal

draw a line, double click on it anf change the parameters to what you want them to be.
Open view>formattingpalette then alter the parameters of the shadow to 0°, 0pts and make it white.

Right click on your line and chose Set Autoshape Defaults from the contextual menu that opens up

Do File>save and save the Normal template

Job done
