Turn off increment

In a table, if I enter data in a text field for two records, the third record
gets filled automatically. For instance, I enter "3" in the first record and
"5" in the next, as soon as I move to the filed in the third record, it gets
populated with "7".
Although this is a text field, Access somehow interprets this as numbers and
calculates the next one with the same increment. Unfortunately, this is not
what I want. It just happens that my text sometimes looks like "20043".
How can I turn off this kind of "autoincrement"?

This happens in Datasheet view (e.g. in a table) in Access 2000 - 2003 (and
possibly earlier.) Microsoft does not provide a way to turn this annoying
behavior off.

They did listen to feedback and disable it in Access 2007 though. Also, it
does not occur in Continuous or Form view.

Workarounds therefore include:
a) Create a form in Continuous view. You can make it look like a datasheet
by placing the labels in the Form Header section above each text box.

b) Use A2007.
