I understand going from one tool (say, conector to text); however, how does

You mean keyboard shortcuts?
Ctrl + 1 gets you back to the pointer tool.
Ctrl + 2,3,4... switches to other tools.

One "tool" is always active....the "pointer" tool does nothing if you don't
use except to point or select.
I can't think of any program ever that does not have something "on" all the
time otherwise you would not have a cursor position.
