Turning Down MS Word Alert Sounds

I like the alert sounds that come with Word, but they so loud that
people hear them one office over. Is there a way of turning them down
short of turning down the system volume on my computer? I've also
played with the "alert sounds" output in the system preferences but it
doesn't seem to affect the Word sounds.

I'm pretty sure that it uses the "global" system volume. There is no way to
adjust the alert sounds independent from other sounds.

You _might_ be able to make a new set of sounds and reduce the levels of the
sounds themselves. Maybe someone will chime in with a freeware app and some
instructions for that possibility.
