Tweak UI

Michael

For some reason, my MRU list has been disabled and in searching the MS site,
this article comes up with some useful answers but I can't see how to remove
or delete this Tweak UI application....http://support.microsoft.com/kb/301691/

I have no recollection of ever downloading the program and this appears to
have happened only over the last day or so.

How do I find it to remove it and restore my machine to its former state?

Thanks

Michael

If you didn't download TweakUI, then it is unlikely you have it.
If you do, it will appear in Control Panel.
It can be removed with Add/Remove.

I suggest you use the information in the article you quote, as it
gives you an indication of how to change it in the Registry.

Please post to a newsgroup for your operating system (which you don't
mention) as this is not an Office problem.

Thanks Alan,

Sorry about the inexperienced post. As it affected all my Office products,
I suspected it was the Office policy problem rather than the XP Pro operating
system...will do in future.

I have gone into the Registry Edit function though and don't quite
understand whether I should be resetting the binary from 01 00 00 00 to
something else or whether it is actually meant to be 01 00 00 00 if all
things are "normal"...

The wording is a bit ambiguous, that's all.

Tweak UI and Group Policy
When you click to clear the Add new documents to Documents on Start Menu
check box, the value of NoRecentDocsHistory under
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\
is set to binary 01 00 00 00. NoRecentDocsHistory is a system-level Group
Policy setting.

Can you clarify what the binary setting should be to restore this to its
former operation?

Thanks

Hi Michael

Short answer. Set it to 00 00 00 00

If NoRecentDocsHistory is 1 (true) then the policy is enabled, i.e.
there will be no recent docs history.

To get back to "normal", set it to 0 (false) (00 00 00 00) or delete
NoRecentDocsHistory. It is not there by default and not being there is
the same as false.

Minor point.
Versions of Tweak UI for Windows XP and perhaps newer versions of Tweak UI
for other Windows version appear under {All} Programs not in Control Panel.

Good point, though in my defense, the KB article in discussion was not
for XP.

AFAIK, other Windows versions of TweakUI still show in Control Panel,
unless there is something later than 1.33

No need for defense.
AFAIK, you are correct.
I only mentioned it as a minor point because users of Windows XP may look in
the wrong place.

Is this happening for all applications or just one application? Also,
what version of Office are you using?

Also, this may very well be an Office related issue. An add-in could
be preventing updates in the Registry and this is also a symptom of a
corrupt Word Data key.

Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Requests for
assistance by email can not be acknowledged.

Thanks Beth,

It was across all products in the Office Suite.

I found the entry in the registry and with Alan's advice, upon complete
removal it cleared the problem. Not sure though how it appeared in the first
place.

No big deal though, all fixed now.

Thanks for your interest.
