two printers with different ideas

Could someone please shed some light on this matter. I've set out a
document in Word 2000, sent the .doc file to my Mother who printed it
off to find it twice the size. Why have my settings in layout and font
size, etc, not be retained?? Any advice would be great. Thanks.
