two users on sytem..nope..just me

everytime I open a doc,I get an eror message telling me
that the doc is already being used ( BY ME) and do I
want to make a copy...I'm the only user but it seems to
think that there are two..how do I stop this.I get the
same message when I'm on a network and I open a doc that
some else is reading..
if possible pls reply to my home email address

How are you opening the files? If you are opening the files outside
the application (other than using File/Open) then it sounds like the
File Association needs to be recreated.

Go to Start/Run and run the following:

winword /r

Note that there is a space before the forward slash.

Search your computer in Windows (with Word closed) for the following file
pattern:

~*.do?

These are locking (user) files created by Word to identify a document (or
template) in use. They are normally deleted when you close files and exit
Word. However, if you have multiple copies of Word running or exit Word
other than properly (i.e., it crashes), they can be left around. They will
cause the message you are seeing, just as if someone else with your name
were linked to your computer on a network.

With Word closed, you can safely delete any files found by Windows matching
that pattern. Be careful, though! If you leave out the ~ and just search for
*.do? you'll pick up all of your documents and templates; which, I trust,
you do _not_ want to delete.
