Two versions of Office opening when opening existing document

Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere, but I couldn't think how
to explain the problem to search.

When I double click an existing word or excel document it opens, but
so does another blank excel or word document. Anyone got any idea how
to fix this.

Also,and I don't know whether this is related or not, the Outlook
synchronization logo in my task bar shows that it is syncronizing most
of the time.

Any thoughts gratefully received.
