Typing In Word Hangs

D

Dave

I have a problem similar to an earlier posting. When I
open MS Word, I type one or two characters and then Word
hangs up. After a minute or so, Word will allow me to
type another couple of characters and then hangs again.

The problem goes away when I open MS Word in safe mode
(Start, Run, type in "winword /a", Press "Enter").

The computer I'm using has AMD's Athalon XP 1900+
processor, 1GB DDR SDRAM, Windows 2000 (SP4 and all
patches), and Office XP Pro (2002 w/SP2 and all patches).

Possibly related is Outlook. When I open Outlook, it also
opens MS Word. If I originate e-mail, what I type in the
first e-mail is displayed in the MS Word Window. After
sending it, second and subsequent e-mails originated
during that session are displayed in a regular message
window.

Does anyone have any ideas how to fix the Word problem?
Is it related to Outlook?

Thanks,

Dave

Suzanne,
My symptoms don't match those described in
the "ProbsOpeningWord" article. Word opens quickly and
never crashes.
What happens is my cursor stops blinking after typing
a character. It stays that way until I switch from Word
to another application and then back to MS Word. I then
type another character which hangs Word again. Here's
another interesting aspect. It only prints the first
character I typed rather than the whole string of
characters I might have typed.
Do you (or anyone else) have any other suggestions?
Thank you,
r/s
Dave

If the symptoms go away when you start Word with the /a switch, then the
problem is caused by a damaged Normal.dot template, a damaged Registry key,
or an add-in. Try the troubleshooting steps in
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm until you
isolate the cause.

Robert and Others:
Running WORD 2002 on XP, Novell Netwrok. I was having similar
problems, it all started the first time I ran "Memo Wizard" from within
Word. Network access for Word and Excel slowed to a crawl, yet Notepad
and IE had no trouble navigating drives.

On one network server, we un-installed the group policy settings and
then re-installed them, this seemed to solve the problem, although I am
afraid to rerun memo wizard. On another computer, connected to a
different server, the problem went away the first time after we ran
"WINWORD.EXE /a" (Word in Safe Mode; although I cannot explain why.

Hope this information helps, if anyone can explain this to me I would
appreciate a reply.
