typing probem

Hello,
when i type in an office 2003 application it won't respond
automatically, ie the caracters don't show up and I need to play around
with the mouse and positioning the cursor again to make things work.
It is not the case in other applications.
Ie in Excel I can't type directly in the cells, I need to type in the
field above the work sheet,
any ideas ? I've just reinstalled and updated the whole system (XP pro
SP2...
