ugly url's

How can I change those ugly url's like ww.mysite.com/file.htm etc?
I want either just the piece without the .htm or even better, just the
domain.

Use frames.

But that impacts your search engine standing.

NO it won't.

But it deeply impacts your visitors, and you, in the long run.

My advice would be to ignore ugly URI's - your clients certainly do - and
pay attention to the function of the page.

Ugly is in the RAM of the beholder.

Let me put it this way. You want to send a snail mail to your buddy. You
have to type in his address on the front of the envelope. Now, you've
decided that the following is ugly, and you don't want to dirty-up the
appearance of the envelope with it:

Mike's Friend
902 South Grunhilda Boulevard, Suite 45-B
Brouhaha, AK 98765-0236

What part can you remove to safely send the snail mail and make sure you get
it to its destination?

You can remove the same part of a URL.

Or, you can accept that this is where the address properly goes and leave it
at that.

If the filename for your home page is in the list of default page names in
the server settings, then www.example.com will display the home page.
For other files, create folders with the required name, and place the page
in the folder. The page must be the same name as the home page (or in the
server's default page name list.
Example: www.example.com/mypage will display index.htm in the folder
mypage.

try www.shorturl.com.

You sign up, and can get a free subdomain URL but it diverts to your "real" URL
so you put in www.yoursite.shorturl.com and it displays the site at
www.mysite.com/~yoursite/index.htm for instance, but displays as the URL
www.yoursite.shorturl.com - which is kind of what you're after ?

You can have whatever you want.....this is really a redirection service, not a
domain or hosting service.
if you ever change hosts or providers, you just have to update the account at
www.shorturl.com with your new *real* url (eg on your members' web space) with
your new host or ISP.

simple!
just make a folder without an "ugly" looking url such as:
http://example.com/prettyURL

then whatever page you want fed from that url, just put it in there as the
default (index.htm, default.htm, or whatever your server will feed as a
"default")

Imagine that!
I'm a boxing fan more than anything, but I like to see a team win something
they've obviously tried so hard at for so long.
