Ultra-slow style dropdown list response in Word 97

In a new document, based on a unmodified NORMAL.DOT, if i
click onto the dropdown list to choose the "style", my PC
becomes EXXXXXTREMELY slow, and the dropdown list appears
one row at a time, after a delay of 15 seconds, each every
5 seconds at least.
What's happening?
In my Fonts folder there are about 750 fonts installed,
but no other app behaves like this, even MSPaint...
What should I do? Please don't post obvious answers like
reinstalling, I'm a system manager, I've already tried
it... :)

This can indicate a problem with the printer driver. Try deleting and
reinstalling the printer (preferably using an updated driver), or try a
different driver temporarily. You don't say what version of Word you have. I
noticed this especially in landscape documents in Word 97 on an older
(slower) computer.
