Unable to create custom keyboard shortcut

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) I get to where you are able to create a custom keyboard shortcut. But when I select my command "NextChangeorComment" and select the "Press new keyboard shortcut" field, nothing happens. No text shows up in the field, nor does the "Assign" button become selectable.

Since you don't specifically say that you did so, once you click in the
field you need to press the actual key combination you want to assign to the
command. If you did so but nothing displayed in the field it's because you
attempted to use a key combination that can't be reassigned -- try something
else.

Once you type an allowable combination the Assign button will become
active -- Just make sure that the combination isn't already assigned to
something else unless you want to change the assignment.

Sorry, didn't mention that I tried typing in combos. Is the combo hidden when you type it? Because absolutely nothing shows up - how can I remember what the combo is if the text is hidden?

As I wrote, if the stroke you type doesn't appear it's because that stroke
cannot be used... there are some which are pre-empted by the OS or
hard-coded in Word.
