unable to delete empty folders

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: intel
Email Client: imap

have my gmail account linked via imap to entourage which worked fine until i wanted to empty several folders. Although i try to delete them nothing happens. Any suggestions?
