Unable to delete files

I have a few files that I downloaded from my company's server system. They
are "read-only" and will not delete. I get an error message when I try to
delete or open them - how do I get them OFF my computer? Error Message reads:
Cannot delete "MULTI_~.xls": cannot find the specfied file. Make sure you
specifiy the correct path and file name. HELP! I no longer work for this
company and I hate seeing the files everytime I go into my directory!! Thanks!

It kind of sounds like you want to delete them from Excel's Most Recently Used
File list (under File|open).

If that's true, you can clean up all of them via:
tools|Options|general tab
Uncheck the recently used file box.
Ok your way out.

then back to excel and try File|open--they should all be gone--even the good
ones.

Now turn that MRU list back on.
tools|Options|general tab
Check the recently used file box.
and make xl save 9 entries--might as well use all of them.

If that wasn't it, where are they showing up and how are you trying to delete
them?

=====

If it was on the file|open dialog under the "look in" Recent category, you can
find Office's Recent folder (just show the folder names at the top of the
dialog--like you would if you're going to change drives/folders) and traverse to
that location and remove the shortcut(s) from that folder.

In xl2002 under win98, my Recent folder was:
C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Recent

But that'll vary with versions of windows and versions of excel.
