Unable to Edit a Cell by Double Clicking

C

Compassion_First

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel I've recently switched to Mac. On my PC I was able to double click to edit within a cell w/out having to use the formula bar.

I've made sure the "Double-click allows editing within the cell" preference box is checked--BUT it's still not letting me edit.

Also, I've read up on the forum regarding control+U BUT it doesn't work for adding a Header to my doc. :(

Anyone have any clue as to what's going on?

First, please make sure your MacOffice is fully updated to 12.2.4. If this problem still persists, please try holding "shift" key while launch XL. I suspect there could be a plist corruption happening here.

Neither the dbl-clk nor Control+U have any flaws within the program -- they
both work as advertised -- so the problem must be local to your system. It
may be isolated to a specific file -- have you tried in other workbooks?

The first thing to determine is that Office is fully updated (12.2.4). It's
pointless to chase symptoms if the updates haven't been applied. Also,
confirm that OS X is fully up-to-date as well & run Disk Utility - Repair
Disk Permissions after applying any updates. Restart the Mac & see if the
problem persists.

Thanks so much for your suggestion.
I did update to 12.2.4.
I launched Excel holding the shift key down but that didn't do anything...was it supposed to?

Problem still exists.

Hi there,
Thanks for you reply. I've updated to 12.2.4 but that didn't do the trick.
Also, not sure if holding the shift while launching Excel was supposed to do anything..but nothing changed. *Note: I shutdown & restarted just in case. Nada :(

Any other thoughts?

Yeah -- one so simple I overlooked it in my initial reply... Make certain
that your pointer is actually in the * middle* of the cell. If it's proximal
to the edge dbl-clk won't work. That position is a navigational feature.

Also, I have no idea what you meant by the second part of your message:

"...it doesn't work for adding a Header to my doc."

Headers aren't entered into a cell in the first place. If you actually mean
'headings' (captions, field names, etc.) just select the cell & type the
content. There's no need to dbl-clk or use Command+U -- they're only
necessary if you want to edit/revise existing content directly in the cell
rather than using the Formula Bar's editing field.

Holding down the Shift key while starting Excel disables all the add-ins and
parameter lists that could be creating an issue.

All going well, "nothing" is exactly what should appear to happen. But
behind the scenes, Excel has started up in "Brand New" mode, using a
complete set of standard default settings.

This enables us to be quite sure that whatever is happening is being
produced by Excel and not by something added on to Excel from a different
manufacturer.

If the problem still occurs under those circumstances, the problem is with
Excel, not with your settings.

Cheers
