Unable to format inserted picture

Never had a problem with this before this morning: When I
insert a background picture into the Header (or anywhere
for that matter), it comes up as a white box, and I am
unable to format it at all. The same happens even when
inserting images that I have been able to insert before
with no problem.
Also, the option to make the header same/different as
previous is no longer available.
Any ideas?
Is this as simple as a check box in the Options that
somebody has ticked or a lot more serious?

Hi Mark,

Go to Tools|options|View and make sure the 'Picture placeholders' box under
'show' is NOT checked.
