Unable to hide columns

I am unable to hide columns in Excel 2004 (11.2.3). Regardless of the
spreadsheet, I have no "hide" option under Format:Column (though I do
have "unhide" and am able to hide/unhide rows). I highlight a column
or columns, but do not see the hide option.

Any suggestions?

If you select a number of rows and or columns and then control + click -- do
you get the hide/unhide options on the context menu?
