Unable to install Jet 4.0 SP8

G

Greg Hines

Hi all,

I'm trying to install Jet 4.0 SP8 on an XPe PC and I'm getting an error
message stating a more recent version is already installed. The
installation then quits.

Does anyone know what determines the version that's already installed or how
I can force the install of SP8?

TIA

A Windows Update superceded Jet 4.0 SP8. So I wouldn't try to force
such an install.

To determine if you have the latest version of Jet installed you
search on msjet40.dll on your system. You should only find the one
in your WIndows\System 32 directory. When you right click on the
file >> Properties >> Version you can see the version number.

Jet 4.0 SP 6 - 4.0.6218.0
Jet 4.0 SP 8 - 4.0.8015.0
Microsoft Security Bulletin MS04-014 - 4.0.8618.0

For a somewhat complete list of msjet40.dll versions see
How To: Obtain the Latest Service Pack for the Microsoft Jet 4.0
Database Engine
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=239114

Ignore the msjet40.dll files found in the following directories:
C:\WINDOWS\LastGood\System32
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386

OK, as this is XPe SP2 you are correct that there is a later release then
SP8.

I've searched the whole HDD and there's no MSJET40.DLL anywhere plus all the
Jet Engine DLL's are also missing. This confirms to me that Jet 4.0 is not
installed on this PC.

I think Jet 4.0 SP8 "sees" XP SP2 and says as this is SP2 I will not proceed
with the install. It obviously does not check the version of MSJET40.DLL, as
it does not exist in this case.

The problem now is how do I get Jet installed on this PC?

TIA

Did you take a look inside Windows\system32 yourself? You may have
the folder hidden and such and the search may thus not have looked
there.

Yes I did look and the files are definitely not there.

Any suggestions?

Yes I did look and the files are definitely not there.

The files *must* be there, as they are a component of Windows (since
Win2K), as Active Directory uses Jet as its data store. This is why
it gets updated through Windows Update and with SP2.

I just run a clean version of Windows XP in a Virtual PC session. No
software including Office/Access has ever been installed on it. (I
use this VPC OS if I want to make a copy to test a runtime install or
something else on.) The msjet40.dll version 8618 is indeed in
Windows/System 32.

In Windows Explorer Tools >> Folder Options >> View >> Show hidden
file types is set to yes.

As I previously stated the files are definitely not there. Remember in my
original post this is XPe (XP Embedded) and you do have the ability to "cut
down" the installation.

Now all I want to do is add Jet 4.0 support.

Any ideas appreciated.

TIA

I just ran a clean ...

Yes but I'm using XP Prof *** Embedded *** and not standard XP Prof. that's
the difference.

Oh, that's what the e means. I figured that was a typo of some sort.

Then I have no idea.
