Unable to merge cells

Although I have unprotected all that I could find, I am unable to merg
cells on a particular file. Other files are OK. The merge icon i
grayed out.

Not sure whether this is what you're facing, but from Excel's Help .. :
Merge cells is one of the features that are unavailable in shared workbooks
