Unable to open files

Toshiba laptop running Win XP and Office 2003. The
error message "The File <filename>.doc is not available"
comes up whenever I try to open a document
in word. I get similar problem trying to open excel files
(refers to virus scanner finding aproblem with file) &
powerpoint docs. There is no AV software running. I have
uninstalled & reinstalled Office to no avail.

Any help appreciated
