Unable to open more then 10 projects in one time via epm

When we open more then 10 projects (readonly) from EPM we get errors and a
open dialog box appears. In the titlebar of the open dialogbox the folowing
message appears (translated from dutch):

Could not find the inserted project <>\projectname -
subprojectname.publised(R/O).

We have several projects , where the name is of the folowing format:
superprojectname - subprojectname.

We separated 10 subprojects in 10 subfiles, without a master project. We
want to open them all 10 together...

(SP1 is installed)

Does anyone knows the problem?

Hi Johan,

Did you use the "open" multiple files from PWA Center of
projects? or just created a master projet from Proj Pro ?

Anyway using master project, require high ressource
availability, do you have 1 or 2 MB memory on your
server?

Hi Gary,

Tx for input, but wat puzzles me, is that if I open 9 projects, there seems
no problem...

Is the use of the dash is not checked by EPM on saving the project, so my
question is, is the use of a dash officially forbidden (described somewhere
in a manual)? Or is this some sort of bug?

Project Server is not happy with the use of dashes '-' in the project name.
Remove these.

I did just open the projects from EPM.

We want to have an portfolio overview including the summary bars of all our
projects. Since it seems not possible to print the portfolio gannt view, we
want to open all those projects to print a summary 'project' bar in MSProject.

Johan:

What happens when you open a new project in Project Professional and Insert
Projects into the plan without expanding them? Can you exceed 10 plans? What
are the specs on your workstation?

I'm not certain if and where the prohibition on dashes is listed in the
documentation.

Specs of the workstation: using published application of Citrix. Server is a
blade with 4 gig of memory. I can open all projects, if I open them one by
one, so I don't think the specs are a problem here.

I think there is a problem somewhere in the database or in the string that
is used to open the file (see also the strange path it mentions (the "<>\"
characters before the name):

<>\projectname - subprojectname.publised(R/O).

.. One detail: I think (but I'm not 100% sure) that this problem started whem
I renamed several proejcts with the rename tool of EPM (resourcekit).

The rename operation I did was directlry on the EPM server (via a terminal
server connection).

I've been looking ni the tables of epm and found the following, my question
is, is this normal in other implementations?

In the table MSP_VIEW_PROJ_PROJECTS_ENT
In the column ProjectEnterpriseName
I found all the names preceding with the characters <>\

e.g. <>\EPM implementation

In the table MSP_PROJECTS
In the column PROJ_NAME
I found all names without the characters <>\

e.g. EPM Implementation

Is this a normal way of logical data storage in EPM. If not I want to try to
remove those <>\ in the MSP_VIEW_PROJ_PROJECTS_ENT table in the database.

The strange thing is, that the problems only occur when I have more then 10
projects to open, so it seems to me that the those characters are not the
issue here...

Can someone give me a clue about those characters?

It appears that the problem is as follow: after renaming the projoct
(removing the dashes) with the ProjRenamer.exe tool, it looked like the names
were changed, but in fact: this is partial true.

in the normal userinterface, you see no dashes anymore. But in the table
MSP_WEB_Projects, the column WLOCAL_PATH the dashes are still there. The
same applies for the MSP_VIEW_PROJ_PROJECTS_ENT table in the
ProjectEnterpriseName.

In the table MSP_PROJECTS then column PROJ_PROJECT is changed like it should
be.

If I change the name of the project in the WLOCAL_PATH manually, the
specific project has no problem anymore.

The use of dashes in projectnames is a problem (maybe a bug?), but also the
rename tool does not update all tables automatically (maybe a bug?).

A way (as an alternative of editing the database manually) to change the
tables to the right name in the other columns also, is to open the projects
individually via MSProject(this is possible without any problem) and then
save the projects. Then the tables are all updated and everything seems to
work.

Tomorrow I will test this on alle projects in our database and I will notify
in this forum. if this solution worked.

It appeares that removing the dashes is not (the only) problem, it is still
impossible to open more then 10 projects.

Is there some document with a list of illegal characters. Some users are
using ampersant, other semicolons, etc. Essepecially when they have a larger
name as title of the project. I want to check if one of the chaarcter could
be the problem.

Kind regards,
