Unable to open old files in Office 2007 Beta

K

kvenkatesh

I just downloaded and installed the new office 2007 beta professional plus,
and am unable to open any of my old word/powerpoint/excel/publisher, etc.
files (my older version of office was office xp 2002), and whenever i try to
open a file, it is either "not available", "not readable", or "has a virus".
please help!?

Do you get an error message? If so, what does it say? Please don't
paraphrase.

K

kvenkatesh

if i try to open a word file (from xp), it says

"The file ________ is not available"

if i try to open a powerpoint file (from xp), it says

"PowerPoint cannot read ___________________________.ppt"

if i try to open an excel file (from xp), it says

"the file cannot be opened because your virus scanner has detected a problem
with the file"

DETAILS -
You may be encoutering this message because an anti-virus program is not
allowing the file to open. This can be caused by one of two conditions.
Either the anti-virus program needs to be updated (due to a compability
problem with this application) or there is a virus in the file but the
anti-virus program cannot properly remove or process the virus it has found.
In either case, the file you are attempting to open should be treated as
infected until you have updated your anti-virus software to the latest
updates available from the vendor. All major anti-virus software
manufacturers have created updates to address known compatibility problems
with Office applications. They also usually provide a virus signature file
that is available for download from the Internet and must be updated
regularly to properly scan for all known forms of viruses.
If you are experiencing this problem on a computer where a new version of
anti-virus software was recently installed from a CD-ROM, it is advised to
connect to the Internet and download the latest updates available from the
vendor.
If you are experiencing this problem on a computer where the latest version
of the software is installed, all signature files are up to date, and the
file will not open (but other files do) then it is very likely the file is
infected with a virus and the anti-virus program cannot remove the infection.
There is also the possibility the file is corrupt (damaged) and cannot be
properly handled by either the anti-virus software or the affected Office
application. In this case, it may be necessary to attempt recovery of the
file using the related recovery utilities that may be available with the
application (not all applications have file recovery or repair capabilities).
For more information about this issue, see the Microsoft Knowledge Base
article 835404.

the odd thing is that i do not have a virus scanner running.

if i try to open a publisher file (from xp), it says

"Publisher cannot open the file"

i also downloaded and installed the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for
Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats (Beta 2)
and the Office 2007 File Format Awareness Update for Microsoft Office XP KB
910474

i don't think any of my files are corrupted because they all open fine in
office xp

if you could provide any help i would be grateful.

thanks

i just tried something else, as well, to see what would happen

if i create a file in office 2007 (be it word/powerpoint/excel/publisher,
etc.), and save it in any format using the new office, i am still unable to
open it. am i missing something?

If you're using Symantec/Norton AntiVirus, try disabling the
Office Plugin that comes with it. See

programs with the Norton AntiVirus Office plug-in" for more
information.
