Unable to Open USB drive from Office apps

When I insert an USB stick, the drive does not appear in the available
drives in either the Open or Save As dialog boxes.
I've tried it in Excel, Word and Outlook Express. I can however, do this OK
in Windows applications, namely NotePad and WordPad.

I can view and do everything as normal with that stick via Windows Explorer.
and also, when I insert the stick, it automatically opens the normal dialog
box , "Portable Device", asking, "What do you want Windows to do", etc.
