Operating XP Pro and Office 2000 Pro fine until about a month ago.
Now, after an Microsoft update, that requires a "restart", I am unable to
open any Office items!
Instructed to go to run setup, at location of installation???
If I do a System Restore to the day before the last update took place, then
everything fine, (until next time computer restarts or is switched on).

The new hotfix should have fixed this but try this solution:

1. Close any open windows.

2. Go into Task Manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL) and kill any processes called
verclsid.exe.

3. Go into the c:\windows\system32 folder (on a WinXP machine, where
c:\windows is the drive where windows is installed).

4. Make sure that file extensions can be seen (Tools, Folder Options,
View tab, Hide extensions for known file types off, click OK).

5. Scroll down to the file named verclsid.exe and rename it to
verclsid.old.

6. Change the option back for file extensions to not be shown (if you
want).

7. Everything should work again.

"I guess you could have just have deleted the verclsid.exe file, but I
don't know if we will need to change it back eventually when whatever is
wrong is fixed."

The new fix (released 04/25) has its own problems but I won't list them
here just in case it is supposed to be kept secret until solution found!

See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165 "Problems in Windows
Explorer or the Windows shell after you install security update
MS06-015". If you aren't comfortable with editing the Windows
registry yourself, then go to
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm and scroll
down to Item No. 383 "Hewlett-Packard's Share-to-Web software -
Fix". Download and run the script to automatically modify your
registry as described in KB918165. You may need to temporarily
disable your antivirus program in order to run the script.
Modifying the registry solves the problem for most people.

On April 25, a revised version of the MS06-015 update was
released. The revised update supposedly interacts better with
the older HP and nVidia software that the April 11 version had
problems with. You can download the revised update from
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-015.mspx
.. You might try installing the revised update if modifying the
registry doesn't work for you.

Some people may suggest that you uninstall the MS06-015 update,
or rename the c:\windows\system32\verclsid.exe file. Doing
either of these things will leave your computer vulnerable to the
security issue described at
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-015.mspx
, so you should avoid these measures unless the problem persists
after you have tried both the registry modification and the
revised update.
