Unable to open word files

R

Reg Reberger

Hi,

When I try to open up any .doc file in word it says that
the file is not available. This also happens to other XP
files such as .xls, .ppt etc Any help would be
appreciated.

How are you opening the files? If you are opening the files outside
the application (other than using File/Open) then it sounds like the
file association needs to be recreated.
Go to Start/Run and run the following:

winword /r
excel /regserver
powerpnt /regserver
msaccess /regserver

Note that there is a space before the forward slash.

If that isn't the problem then did you recently install an Office
update and are you using Norton? If so then in Norton Options select
the Miscellaneous section and disable the "Office Plug-in" option.

I'm having the same problem as Reg.

Even if I try to open the files from from within WORD,
EXCEL or POWERPOINT, the application will not open. In
WINWORD, it says the file is not available, in EXCEL and
Powerpoint, they say can not read.

I did reinstall the whole of Office, then it seems that
things are alright. However, after I installed the SR1
and SR2, this problem appear again.

Yes, I'm using Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition. I
can't find the Office plug-in option.

Apprecaite if someone can help.

The Norton Corporate Edition doesn't have the option, BUT if a
previous version of NAV was installed, which contained the plug-in,
and Norton CE was installed later the DLL for the plug-in could still
be registered.

First search for officeav.dll and if found go to Start/Run and run the
following command:

regsvr32 /u "c:\program files\norton antivirus\officeav.dll"

In the above example the path for "Officeav.dll" would depend on the
location of the DLL.

I have the same problem.
I cannot open files in the Office SUite with File/Open.

I remember using a trial version of Norton AV 2003 but it
froze and then I deleted it.

Anyother suggestions??

If you removed Norton then chances are the DLL for the Office Plug-in
is still registered. See my reply to TAP earlier in this thread for
instructions on how to unregister it.
