unable to perform search operation in Outlook

Unable to search / query for messages using "Instant Search" in Outlook. I
get a message saying "Search results incomplete as items are being indexed"
and also "11000 items open across all mailboxes"

And does that number decrease over time? If so, give Outlook time to be
indexed.

The number has not been decreasing - infact the number has been increasing
everyday. I located the scanpst.exe application and tried to repair the pst
file. However i get a message " Outlook.pst file is in use by another
application. Close Outlook and other mail enabled applications and try again"
I closed all programs - not just Outlook - but it still gives same message.
And 2 days before i posted my query here i went thru' the Index "rebuild"
option also.
