Unable to publish/download/connect to server

FP 2002, Win XP Home SP-2. I'm no longer able to publish or download -
error box indicates unable to find the server. Was able to in the past, but
now no more. Can open, modify and save computer based webs. Am not using a
proxy server (that I know of). The server sites ping ok. A friend with FP
2K is able to access his site, but I canot with FP 2002, nor can I access my
own sites anymore. Does anyone know if this may have been caused by one of
the Windows updates (perhaps like the hyperlinks not working in the Preview
Tab issue). Any insights will be appreciated. TIA

With Win XP SP 2 add FP to the Exceptions
Start Control Panel Security Windows Firewalls Exceptions Add (browse to FP)

Thanks for the quick response Stefan.
Unfortunately, that does not seem to be my problem since the windows
firewall is turned off (although I did follow your advice and have added
frontpg.exe to the firewall exception list in case I do turn it on at some
future date).

Here is my situation:
Cable (roadrunner) connection.
Linksys Router - Hard Wired
Internet Options | Connections | LAN Settings - Use a proxy server unchecked
All Service Packs (Win XP and Office) installed
All Updates installed
No active spyware, adblocker or firewall programs running
Trend-Micro PC-cillin Internet Security Suite (firewall turned off). AV
running (but turning it off makes no difference)
I have attempted to repair FP using the Repair option in Add/Remove
Programs. There were some failures regarding OBCD however, the only other
Office product installed is Word 2002 (SP-3)

I am not certain when the FP unable to publish/download/server not found on
port 80 problem started since I seldom use it. The last verifiable time I
used FP to download and re-publish was 04 August 04 when I updated a website
that I created and maintain for a friend (first one below).

One site in question is http://home.hawaii.rr.com/miracle I can go there in
MSIE, but in FP, I get the server not found error. Another site is
http://www.mooreair.com Same thing.

I am considering doing an uninstall/reinstall of FP, but do not have much,
if any, faith that this will resolve the issue so I am reluctant to do so.

I have searched through the Microsoft Knowledge Base and done most of the
tests recommended (Tests 1-3) in "How to troubleshoot publishing problems
in FrontPage" re:pinging the server, etc and all results were positive,
except for connecting with FrontPage. I know the servers have FP
Extensions, because several features requiring them work when browsing to
the sites in MSIE. Furthermore, the owner of http://www.mooreair.com is able
to publish and download to/ from his XP Pro system using FP 2000.
Additionally, I used to be able to do so as well (both sites) using XP Home
using FP 2002.

Any more thoughts will be appreciated

Solution found!

I had installed Zone Alarm a while back to check out the latest version for
a friend and, although ZA was turned off, the True Vector feature (which I
understand is the "heart" of Zone Alarm) was still running. I spotted it
while looking through Administrative Tools | Component Services | Services.
I was unable to disable it there, so uninstalled ZA which solved the
problem.

Although I did not try, I am pretty sure that if ZA had been running
normally, it would have picked up the FP attempt to go online at which point
I could have told it ok and all would have been roses. Fortunately, after
seeing true vector running, I remembered in the deep recesses of my memory
that true the true vector component continues to operate even when ZA is
turned off. This was NOT a Zone Alarm problem - it was an operator problem!

It do pay to read the manual...

Thanks for your indulgence
