Unable to Publish "Specific" Files...

B

Bilbao

I CAN publish "some" files from frontpage to my website with not problem, it
works fine... almost.

The problem is that for some files (that's where the mystery is) the publish
instruction of frontpage fails with an "http error 500".

The workaround that I have is to publish those file whose "publication"
fails using ftp.

Now, another weird thing is that once one of those files whose publication
fails is on the server (because I moved it via ftp), if I try to "publish" it
through frontpage (not ftp), the publication fails (we know that, right) BUT
the file in the server gets updated (so in that way it does work), SOMETIMES.

The annoying part is that I can't publish the whole site because if it
fails, it (publishing process) doesn't carry on, and then I have to look
manually for those files that didn't make it.

I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling the FP server extensions, but no
success.
My OS is WinXP Pro.
My webserver provider's OS is Linux (owe you specifics, can look 'em up)
Web Server is Apache (again, I can look up the specifics)

Thanks a million in advance for any help I can get!

What are the file extension for the files that fail to publish.

Also, make sure you remove any spaces from file names.
Replace them with underscores _ or dashes -

Steve, the extensions are htm, jpg, gif. And the most unusual character
inthe names is an underscore '_', the rest are alpha numericals (without
starting with a number).

They seem to be random files, because the ones that succeed are htm, jpg and
gif as well.

If I delete the files (because somehow I put them there and try again) the
same files (the ones that fialed before) fail again to publish.

Thanks a lot for your reply

Try this:

Go here: http://www.95isalive.com/fixes/fpclean.htm
and download the free FP Cleaner.

Run the functions that clear the FrontPage Temporary files and the
Cache(.web) files.

Then try to publish and see what happens.

After using FP Cleaner, recalculate hyperlinks before you publish.

Here's a link to a web site that might shed some light on your
problems.
http://webhosting.com/WHCWEB/shared/support/faq/ftp.jsp

I've been having problems with a Chinese SPAM IP address and can
not find a way to block this specific group of IP addresses from
posting their SPAM messages on my bulletin board.

Here's a link to my web site that shows the problem, if you're
interested.

Steve,

I tried the using the FPCleaner tool to remove the temporary files, removed
the .web files. Then rebooted. After the reboot I recalculated the
hyperlinks.
But I still have those files that don't want to "publish".

Thanks for your suggestions

Gordon,

Thanks for the link, it doesn't talk too much about the FP publish process
but it is a good insight into FTP.

I am seriously thinking on using FP's publishing and use FP's ftp instead.

Thanks again!

Then it's a server issue.
Have your host run a server health check.

Yeah, I already tried that. The say it's a Frontpage issue.

I think, I'll see how far I can get by just using FP's FTP.

I'm possitive, besides FP's publish mechanism is required only for forms
(afaik), and I want to keep it as clean as possible (no "webbot" stuff)...

If I find something I'll definitely posting it back here. It's a shame I
seem to be the only one with this problem (some files publish, some don't)...

Thanks a ton for you help
