Unable to Respond to Meeting Notice...help?

Am running Outlook 2003 and Windows XP.
This is a new installation for me so I am an ingenue.

When I get a meeting notice I click accept or any other
response I cannot then reply to the sender... nothing
happens.

Any advice appreciated.
