unable to view message text in Outlook Express

I can send and receive email, but I cannot view the text of any sent or
received messages. When I try to open a new or sent message the viewing box
flickers, the cursor freezes for about thirty seconds, then an error yellow
caution symbol appears bottom right. Is this a serious problem or a quick
fix?

Typically hovering the mouse over the icon of interest will reveal
information about the issue. Please try tha.
