Underline too close

When I put an underline or a double underline it it too
close to the letters. How do I separate the letters from
the underline just a little?

One would think this would be a function of the way the font is designed
(and it may be), but certain printer drivers seem to do a better job than
others. In any case, it's not something you can modify from within Word.
