Underlining feature in AutoFormat does Ital instead

One of the AutoFormat features in Word 97 is supposed to change
underlining
symbols (like _this_) to underlining. Instead, it changes it to
italics. Is there any way to correct this?

Word is behaving as expected. The entry on the AutoFormat As You
Type tab of the Tools > AutoCorrect dialog box reads: "Replace
*bold* and _italic_ with real formatting." In other words: a word
or phrase surrounded by asterisks assume the bold attribute, and
similarly, underline characters apply the italic attribute.

Stefan,

What you say is not correct. The contextualized help item for that AutoFormat feature says:

"Word changes _Emphasis_ to Emphasis."

Isn't the latter occurrence of "Emphasis" in the sentence you're
quoting displayed in italics in Help?

I currently don't have access to Word 97, but in Word 2000 the
complete context help text for "Replace *bold* and _italic_ with
real formatting" (on the AutoFormat As You Type tab of the
Tools>AutoCorrect dialog box) is the following:

"Applies bold character formatting to words enclosed in asterisks
(*), and applies italic character formatting to words enclosed in
underscore characters (_). For example, Word changes *Strong* to
Strong and _Emphasis_ to Emphasis."

And to clarify further, "Strong" is the HTML code for boldface, and
"Emphasis" for italics.

It's displayed just as I've indicated: It says that it changes asterisks into bold and _emphasis_ into emphasis.

As per Suzanne's comment, there's no indication that this has anything to do with the html Emphasis tag. It clearly shows that a word with the underlines around it is changed to an underlined word.
