understanding entourage junk mail

Hi -
I've moved over from Outlook, having used Ella spam control, and I'm
still trying to understand Entourage's junk mail feature.
First and foremost, i can't find the Junk mail folder, assuming there
is one if there is a filter ( I did find those settings). How can I
check that it's removing the right things? There is definitely spam
getting through.
Looking for a good "how-to,"because Entourage's "help" really doesn't
much!

Thanks -
Carol

Hi Carol.

see inline for answers.
I've moved over from Outlook, having used Ella spam control, and I'm still
trying to understand Entourage's junk mail feature. First and foremost, i
can't find the Junk mail folder, assuming there is one if there is a filter (
I did find those settings).

I assume you have already discovered Tools>Junk E-mail Protection? You can
change the setting from "none" to "high" or even use excusive filtering. As
for the junk mail folder: if Junk E-mail Protection is activated, Entourage
will mark messages as junk, but you will need to set up a rule (Tools>Rules)
to move it to a different folder. Alternatively, for IMAP accounts, go to
Tools>Accounts, double-click your account and in the Advanced section,
specify which folder you want to use for junk e-mail.
How can I check that it's removing the right things? There is definitely
spam getting through.

There are a couple of tricks for that: first of all, e-mails coming from
contacts in your address book will never be marked as junk, nor will
messages whose domain is in the white list (Tools>Junk E-mail Protection,
Safe Domains). Another thing to consider is that Entourage's junk mail
filter is not adaptive, i.e. it does not learn which messages are junk
messages. Again, use rules to move messages automatically to the junk mail
folder.
Looking for a good "how-to,"because Entourage's "help" really doesn't
much!

Have a look at the Entourage Help Page <http://www.entourage.mvps.org>, or
more specifically at the following two pages:

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/rules/junk/junk_faqs.html>

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/rules/junk/index.html>

If you have any further questions, feel free to post back! Entourage
certainly is different from Outlook, so it might take some time getting used
to it.
