Undo has completely disappeared

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)

My "Undo" in the Edit menu has completely disappeared. The situation: So, I was trying to figure out how to easily do a 3-em dash and googled it and came up with an answer from someone on a forum for PC Word which said to do cntrl/alt/hyphen. I translated that into what I thought might be worth a shot in Word 2004 for Mac: apple/alt/hyphen. It came up with this little black line which when I clicked it, caused things to disappear. Thereafter, I noticed that the "undo" command was gone from the edit menu, so I'm assuming it's related to the hybrid command I used.

Does anyone know how to get the "undo" command back?

You keyed Command-Option-hyphen (I'm using the Mac terms for these
commands), which is indeed the command that allows you, when you pull down a
menu and let go somewhere, to delete that particular menu item.

Someone will come along soon and tell you how to restore it (I have Word
configured in a non-standard way and may mislead you).

But seriously: why would you want to initiate the Undo command from the
menu? Command-z is a Mac-standard keyboard shortcut. Wasting time pointing
a mouse for this level of command is very time-wasting. Same with Command-s,
p, x, c and v.

Rejoice in its absence! Don't bother putting it back!

Clive has explained the most likely cause of the loss, try this first to get
it back - assuming you do not have any Menu Bar customization you might be
concerned about removing: Go to Tools> Customize> Customize Toolbars/Menus.
On the Toolbars page of that dialog click the *name* of the Menu Bar then
click the Reset button.

If you do have menu customizations of if that doesn't restore it go to the
Commands page of that same dialog. Select the Edit category then drag Undo
from the Commands list to its rightful place in the application Menu Bar
toolbar (not the regular Menu itself).
