This isn't quite on point...
You may want to look at Jan Karel Pieterse's addin called AutoSafe (note
spelling).

Although it does do a (timed) save, it actually saves to a different file. So
you don't need to save your real workbook as often--if you want, you can close
your workbook without saving and reopen it to the last time you really saved.
This addin doesn't overwrite the existing workbook when it saves. It saves to
a user selectable folder. And when it's done, it either deletes these backups
(or puts them in the recycle bin). And you can always restore the backups from
the recycle bin.
Even if it doesn't fit your exact needs, you may find it useful in a generic
sense!
Is there a way to turn on undo past save.
I have to save all the time because of loosing way too many windows to
the winBeast. However, this currently kills my undo history which can
be bad sometimes.
BTW - Open office does support this :]
