Series of questions: 1/of many

We created a workbook with many macros, which includes a
few images. This was done in Excel 97/Windows on the PC.

When the file is ported to the Mac and is opened in Excel
98, I get following error message:
"This file has unicode characters that could not be
converted to the active codepage. Since some data has
been lost, the workbook is being marked read-only."

What characters could be causing this? And could I simply
change the property of the file from read-only to read
after it is opened.

AFAIK, any characters outside the standard Apple font suite could
cause this error. I know that MacBU is aware of the problem and
working on a solution for a future version.

You can't just change the read-only property, but you can do a
SaveAs to a normal file.
