Unique identifier (uid)

Is MS Word able to generate unique identifiers (uid) like the
AutoNumber in Access?

Strictly speaking, no.

What do you want to do? There are ways of doing something like that, but it
depends on how the document will be used and how/when the number has to be
generated.

Thanks for your reply.
I'm writing a requirements spec and I would like to identify uniquely the
sentences with a unique number. The number shall be incremented each time it
is inserted. Is MS Word has this feature build in or is it possible to write
a macro for that ?

Thanks,
Emily

Can't you use paragraph numbering (or LISTNUM fields) for that?

The LISTNUM and the SEQ fields seems to not be unique.
It is possible to delete one sentence with its number and then insert a new
one with the same number.

In that case, unless you have very heavy event checking code that runs all
the time, and that will fairly complicated to write so that you catch all
possible scenarios, I think you really have to use Access or some other
database system to store the sentences.

I did something similar for a client. An access programmer created the
database, we inserted the sentences in Word with DATABASE fields and used
styles to format the resulting document.

But it is a lot of work.

Still, someone could be along with an alternative... I may be too deep in
the forest to see the trees...
