Unique values field for table not working

Okay, this one goes into my "WTF" file:

I have a table in my database that has a part number column with an input
mask and is set as my primary key (w/ the Indexed property set to Yes (No
Duplicates)). I had a group of part numbers that I imported from an Excel
spreadsheet (imported it into a table and then wrote an append query to
populate the part number table). All of the part numbers and coresponding
information imported with no problems EXCEPT I can enter part numbers that
are identical to the ones imported. If I manually enter a part number and
then try to enter the same number, I get the appropriate warning message.
The part number format is ###.#####.###, so it's not like an issue of case
sensitivity. Anyone have any thoughts on this one? Is it possible that I
missed something while importing the data from the Excel spreadsheet?

My guess would be that the apparent duplicates are actually different in
that one includes the "." while the other only appears to include it. I
avoid input masks myself, but if you check the help file, there's a part of
the input mask that determines whether literal characters are saved with the
data or only displayed.
