units of measure on rulers

The units on my Word 2002 and Excel @002 are in
millimetres. I want them to be in inches. In
tools>options>general, the unit shows up as being inches
but not in the document.

I am new to Office XP (as of yesterday) and I am sure it
is some simple little thing that I need to do.
