Universal view of MODI files

Which PC's can view MODI (Microsoft Office Document Imaging) files (extension
..mdi)?

We have Office 2003 on a WinXP PC. I wish to publish/distribute
non-editable views, and might print PDF files (spin wheels eliminating page
truncate in free/$20 PDF995 or spend $300 on Adobe® Acrobat® 7.0 Standard).

Or can everybody with a WinXP PC view/print the MODI files? Or only if they
have Office 2003?

Thanks!

Document imaging is an Office 2002-03 application. You can save a .MDI document
as a .tiff which most folks can open with a proper viewer.

Well, that would be great, but I just tested that approach, printing to MODI
from Office 2003 Excel, but the Print/SaveAs panel only offers me the .MDI
format, not the .tiff format.

I don't see what I am doing wrong, but I could be off-base.

Have you looked at the options in the Document Imaging program?
Tools, Options, Other tab, File Import preferences.

I thought I had remembered, at one time, seeing an option to print to .mdi or
..tiff, but I have had to re-install MODI (due to MS security 'updates', I
have recently read?), and now I only see the one option. According to the
question in your response, I infer that we set the option in printer (MODI)
preferences and we get no option to select at print-time. Oh, well ...

Hi Jean & Gene,

When you print to the MS Office Document Imaging Writer if you choose the TIF file type the result will be a greyscale rendering.
(It's intent was to create faxable TIFF content). If you print to the MDI format (full color) you can then save as a (full color)
TIFF file from that MDI file from within MS Office Document Imaging 2003.
