Unknown application error in Word 2003!!!

when i try to add permission access to my document i get the following
error message: "Cannot verify user information at this time. Contact
your administrator if the problem continues."
1)i am the administrator of the computer (it's a home one)
2)i have already spent more than 4 (four) hours with MS tech support on
the phone within the last two days. we were able to temporary fix the
error.
as it seems to me now, the error appears when i try to contact
the verification server. also i am able to recreate it (make it work and
then crash again). can someone help me because now i do not think that
microsoft is going to fix it fast enough?

Without knowing what MS Support has had you try already some of this
may be repetitive. :)

What did you use for authentication? .Net Passport? Did you download
Rights Management from MS?

Have you tried uninstalling Windows Rights Management and
downloading/reinstalling?

Do you have a firewall?

Try starting Word using the /a switch and see if the error occurs. Go
to Start/Run and run:

WinWord /a

Note the space before the forward slash.

Are you using Norton Anti Virus? If so, open NAV and disable the Office
Plug-in under Options.

i cant even sign up for the service.
Have you tried uninstalling Windows Rights Management and
downloading/reinstalling?

i did un-/re-/install WRMC. the only way i get the sign-up dialog is
when i shut off ALL non-MS services and start-up items, reboot, and
repair WRMC.
Do you have a firewall?

yes. Agnitum Outpost, but winword.exe is in the trusted apps list.
Try starting Word using the /a switch and see if the error occurs. Go
to Start/Run and run:

WinWord /a

did it w/ a rep--didnt help.

here's how the error occurs:
--i shut off the following system.ini, win.ini, non-MS services, and
startup items --reboot
--repair installation of WRMC
--turn on the shut off items
--reboot
--start winword.exe while disconnected
--whent the sign-up dialog opens, click next w/ "Yes"
--the message that IE is set to work offline pops up
--connect to the internet (DSL through network card)
--retry to signup
--the connecting to server dialog shows up
--the error message pops-up and there's no way to get the sign-up dialog
again unless redo all the steps
reinstalling/repairing WRMC w/out shutting off everything does not help

it seems to me like there's a problem connecting to the server.

Try the following:

- Manually download WRMC and install it:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...74-116D-4A6F-BEB2-D6EB6FA66EEC&displaylang=en

- Then sure you are connected to the Internet *prior* to attempting to
connect to the service.

If the above doesn't work then you may get a more knowledgeable
response by posting to:

I am probably barking up the wrong tree in that case. I was thinking it may
have something to do with the Verisign problems, but that didn't effect
Kapersky (which is a very good AV utility).
