Unknown download then no connection to POP3 server

the other night while surfing an install initiated.
I don't know how this started and i don't know what it was.
all i do know is that it asked me to insert my office cd-rom but because I
was suspiscious i cancelled the install.

after that my internet would not connect.
i am on dsl and could not ping the router. it timed out.
after a bit of head scratching i decided to uninstall IE and then did a
repair on outlook2002.

I got back to the point where I could surf the net even though the IE icon
from the start bar had disappeared.
I got into Outlook and found that it got the message.

Task 'pop.dsl.pipex.com - Sending and Receiving' reported error (0x8004210A)
: 'The operation timed out waiting for a response from the receiving (POP)
server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server
administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

My girlfiend that uses the same ISP could get to her email on another
desktop machine on the same router.

I have checked the settings within Outlook and made sure that I am looking
for the correct servers both outgoing and incoming.

I have no even tried uninstalling Outlook and reinstalling it and several
reboots I still get the same error.

I suspect that something has changed in my network setup but don't know
enough to go looking let alone perform a fix.

The age old question begs to be asked.

"Any ideas?"

If more information is required don't hesitate.
