Unknown File Format in MS Photo Editor - O2K

R

Random Confusion

I, too, have a similar problem when trying to open a jpg or gif file with
Office
2000 and Microsoft Photo Editor in Windows 2000.

When Photo Editor opens, I receive a message: "Microsoft Photo Editor
Unknown File Format OK"

If PE is already open, I receive a message: "Microsoft Photo Editor
Photo Editor cannot find or open c:\...<filename>.jpg OK"

I've looked at the file filters in photo editor and jpg, jpeg, and gif are
not in there. I've uninstalled & re-installed both photo editor and office
as a whole with no change. I've installed Office with PE all in one packgage
and I've tried Office lean and then later add PE but still no change.

Any suggestions? I have all Office updates for W2K SP4 as well as all
Office updates itself.

Hi Todd,

You can get that error with a corrupted filter.
You may want to try the fix in this article
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;260151&FR=1
If that's not successful you may need to do a Detect & Repair
on Office 2000.

Check to be sure that you don't have a security product interfering
with your normal operations though.

Bob,

Thank you for the suggestion. I gave the article and the repair a try
(with re-boots between each attempt) with no success. I also removed the
graphics filters and the photo editor, re-booted, then installed PE, re-boot,
install graphic filters, re-boot, and still "unknown file format" error when
opening a jpg file (known good on another system, and this is the only system
that has this problem, and all were installed & updated from the same source.)

<sigh>

Anyone else?
