unlock subdocument

I currently can do nothing when i start word 2000. I currently have windows
xp professional but when i start to type anything in word 2000 nothing seems
to happen. I am locked out of a lot of the regular meu bars and at the
bottom of the screen it says that "the command is not available because the
document is locked for edit. I've went to microsoft help in the application
but it is no help can someone please help or relat to this problem
